Irish dancing, research papers, Forrest Gump, harmonica jams: a typical weekend in Montpellier

Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of updates.  I’ve been pretty busy with coursework; I have a big paper due next week that will serve as the final grade for one of my classes, so I’ve been working on that all weekend.

On Friday I went to Fitzpatrick’s with a friend to listen to the live Irish music there.  I’ve got to say that it was the best that I’ve heard it of the four times that I’ve gone.  There were six members of the band, playing violin, concertina, tin-whistle, mandolin, guitar and bouzouki.  They were incredible and they played a series of reels and jigs.  There were a number of people who actually started dancing, a first for all the times that I’ve been there.

The rest of the weekend, I did research, worked on my paper, and hung out with my host family.  We watched the French dub of Forrest Gump.  Being very familiar with the original, it was easy for me to comprehend.  It was odd, though, not hearing the actor’s accents from the Deep South.  On Sunday, we went to the house of some friends of my host family.  While the adults had tea, I played the harmonica in accompaniment to Thibault and the family’s son’s guitars.  After playing a few numbers, I talked to Emma, an American girl staying with them as part of a year-long high school exchange program.  She has been in France since September and was ecstatic to talk to another American for a while.

Later this week I will start my internship, so stay posted for that.
