Godzilla and Japanese Macbeth

I am falling more and more in love with my Classic Japanese Cinema course.  Today we watched Godzilla, a series that I spent countless childhood hours watching over and over again.  Unfortunately, the original English dub that was released in the United States was heavily censored to omit the film’s central anti-atomic weapons message.  (Because, you know, it was the Cold War and the US needed as many of those as we could build.  What, did you want the Soviets to have more bombs than us?  What are you, a commie?)  After that we watched the Japanese adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.  The only thing that could possibly have made the Scottish Play any better was the judicious application of samurai.  It was amazing and is something that needs to be shared with the world.

Tonight, Montpellier’s famous art museum, the musé Fabré, is free to students from 8:00 until midnight.  I plan on taking advantage of that and then heading to the nearby conversation hour.  A busy day, but full of fun, exciting, and important discoveries.
