Today at my internship, I finished and edited two more radio
show episodes and will record them on Friday.
I hope to have at least one more written by then, leaving me two more to
finish up for next week. One of the two
that I finished today was the third episode of my series on Irish music. This episode centered the emergence of groups
from other genres in Ireland. I started
off with The Pogues, who invented the genre of Celtic Punk, and then talked
about the Young Dubliners, a Rock/Celtic Rock band formed by two Dublin natives
in Los Angeles and whose sound is influenced by its mix of Irish and American
members. I then moved on more broadly
and discussed Van Morrison, who has by this point transcended any kind of genre
label. Pertinent to my discussion,
however, was the fact that his early and mid-to-late songwriting was influenced
by his childhood in Northern Ireland. I
also discussed U2 and Thin Lizzy, rock and hard rock bands respectively, both of
whose members come from Ireland. I
finished by talking about Brian Brody, a master performer who I saw when I was
in Dublin over winter break.
I went to my class this afternoon and discovered that I was
one of six Americans who decided to show up.
I can’t really say that I blame those who chose not to come, the weather
was nice and due to the situation in which the paper we already submitted could
be counted as the final grade, there really wasn’t much of a point to go. I stuck around anyway. If nothing else, I can still claim to never
have skipped a class.
Tomorrow after class, I am going to try to find a barbershop
and get a haircut. I desperately need
it. I haven’t had a haircut since
December.
